lightbulb moments!

I know how we're all environmentalists now and that but I still think customers prefer new packaging materials for their retail orders (I think I do, it seems part of the branding to me, unless your specifically an eco brand) so I love it when I get to reuse envelopes for things I'm sending home to friends & family. The above is just a bubble envelope turned inside out so no need for covering old markings, I think it looks spiffy ! <--- a word I've been trying to get popular to no success so far.
For the postally experienced you may immediately think 'ahh but where do you put the stamps because it won't stick to plastic' because that is what I thought until I realised you can turn the flap over to use hurrah!

As a buyer from any shop, does the packaging/branding of your order make a difference to you?

Sometimes the packaging does matter to me. It is not that I have to have pretty wrapping paper and ribbons and bows. but I have gotten some stuff that looks as though it was used in a few games of football before they shoved whatever I bought in it and mailed it to me. And there is nothing like getting a nice scarf or a pair of gloves shoved into a Tampax or Duncan Hines Cake Mix box. I prefer people just throw their own trash away rather than sending it to me.

Hi. I've been reading your blog since Spoonflower featured your cartoon people but I think I haven't commented before, sorry!

But I had to say that my mom used the word "spiffy" a lot when I was growing up and I still say it sometimes too. So I'm doing what I can for its popularity. :)

RE: packaging... from bigger retailers yes I guess I'd be weirded out if I was sent something in a reused package, but from smaller places I'm okay with it. I do think branded packaging a good idea though, as I STILL have a few cool branded shopping bags from the summer I spent in NYC during college.

I feel the same, on one hand I think 'well at least nothing was wasted' on the other I feel like when I buy something I want the experience of gifting myself.

I would laugh so much if something came in a tampon box, I hope your joking PD ! but after the laughter there would be a bit of disgust :S

Sandra - I'm really chuffed you use the word spiffy ! Together we can do this :D

I hate to see smaller businesses spend a lot on packaging, because most of the time it just gets pitched. I reuse bubble wrap, and have a big pile of it in my shipping supplies, but I never reuse bubble envelopes. I hate Styrofoam peanuts! They're so messy.

I think, as PussDaddy said, it's totally fine to use recycled packaging if you are a smaller seller. In fact, I prefer it. I'm not talking about tampon boxes or rough-looking packages. But I def use packages that have only been used once! And actually, the most common way I recycle packaging is by cutting up bubble mailers. I use small pieces of the old mailers to cushion my pretty packaging and then slide it all in a new envelope (which can still be post-consumer recycled packaging). I think a lot of people value recycling these days. And you can still give the 'gifting' experience.

In the past I've got some seriously over packaged items.. and I think - Damn - I just wasnt the earrings (or whatever it was) and it kind of angers me thinking that I paid for all the bells and whistles of the fancy packaging.. so given a choice between the two I'd rather have something re-used. Personally I ship out my orders in some inexpensive recycled envelopes and I run them through the photocopier at work to glam them up a bit with images of ladies talking on the phone. My customers seem to like it. <3

I often get comments about mine that they like it. I cover old bubble envelopes in old comics. It does look rather awesome.

This is smart! I like to use recycled materials for some orders depending on item.
